Stan's Story

Stan Browning was a devoted husband and Father to his wife Ann and their three children, Gary, Kyle and Erica.  He was an active State Farm Insurance Agent for thirty years and a highly respected businessman in the community he served.  As a State Ranked tennis player, avid runner, and casual golfer his exposure to the sun was frequent and extensive

Stan discovered a suspicious spot on his back that was removed and diagnosed as a Melanoma.  One year later, at the age of 53, he was diagnosed with Metastatic Melanoma of the spine.   Although Stan and his family fought the disease with the same determination they devoted to everything else, sadly, after two years he lost the battle.

In his memory, Stan’s family established the Stan W. Browning Melanoma Cancer Foundation in 2003. The mission of this non-profit organization is to increase skin cancer awareness in the community, promote increased use of preventative measures along with early detection, and provide support to melanoma patients as well as their families.

Since the foundation’s inception, we have joined forces with the Kentucky Cancer Program, The Brown Cancer Center, and participating healthcare specialists to provide education, free sunscreen, and more than 350 free skin screenings at many events throughout the Louisville metropolitan and surrounding areas. The foundation’s presence at these events has been well received and has led to 41% of screened participants being referred for additional review, and recommendations for biopsies to 20% of those same participants.
